Apex Choppy Market Warning [Video]

#1

When this indicator is added, there’s no data displayed. I’ll assume this is because I don’t receive index data in my AMP/CQG data feed.

You can use on 5 or 10 minute data - i often use 5 minutes data for choppy market

My favorite market to use this on consistently is OIL CL whose symbol you will use for the chop warning is OIV

You need index data (ie iqfeed, kinetick.com TD ameritrade/TOS, IB, etc…) this is only loaded on time based bars so it does not matter the data feed source.

Important if connecting to CQG and IQFeed etc… on CQG Feed make sure in the connection settings - where your username and password are it has Include Index Data unchecked - so it will read it from IQ Feed

CBOE Indices are what is needed -

It is like 5 or 10 to get it (TOS includes it free i believe)

Depending on trading level you may not need it - this is for more advanced style Diagnostic Analysis

Also though it can be helpful outside of market hours. Its accuracy will be when the CBOE Indice is actually open (usually open outcry hours for that product) to see the hours simply open the symbol ie ^OIV on a 10 minute chart. And give it at least 2 bars to “catch up”. So say on oil the strongest most accurate signals wold be 9:20 to 2:30 PM ET.

I do like the broad market indicators (this is a indicator used by nearly every single professional trader i know uses - at least us indice traders) and all the statistics they have as well, and I do use kinetick as a back futures data feed (free cme with cme waiver program)…Note this is an added expense and is best reserved once you have some profits coming in =- it is also a “style” part of the trading system

Note if you have an Interactive Brokers or Think or Swim/TDA account you can feed it in from there - even though we are using tick bars - we aren’t using tick bars to build the CMWI so their data will work just fine (so long as its llive)- feeding the data into Ninjatrader - note you can feed a dozen different data feeds into ninja trader - with any ninja trader license free/leased/paid/broker sponsored/single broker/multi broker etc…

You can also test it on EOD data on daily bars using kinetick as well

On indices make sure to use the right index on the indicator - if using kinetick you will need to look up exact symbol on their site - note all indexes have a ^ in front of them in ninja - (Shift + 6)

You can use it on the following markets…

note in NT7 use Shift 6 ^ before the name ie ^VIX

#6

Hey Darrell, I’ve got the ^vix chart up. I’m using 5 min bars. Is that correct? Do I need any other settings on this one? Next, is the vix a combined average volitity of all the indices? I noticed on the list and the website that there seems to be one for each indice. Is that right? The chart I have is from IQ and is the only one I can bring up for that extra price, right?

#7

I rarely ever watch the vix… I use it in my choppy market warning indicator but thats about it.

VIX is for the S&P 500 Index -SPX it is the measure of the implied volatility of the S&P 500 Stock Index Options.

You need to manually add the other symbols to your instrument manager. You can view all of them if you have the CBOE Volatiliy Indices subscription. Symbols are above - see education - ninjatrader - instrument maanger video on how to add symbols.

VIN is for ES

#8

you can change the symbol in NT7 for the choppy market warning to match the corresponding index commodity etc…

ie for Russell 2000 (TF/IWM/Small Cap 2000)

How To Add the Indicators

#10

The summary of how this indicator works is it shows when the underlying options market is preparing for a potential move in the opposite direction (ie market is going up but so is implied volatility) or market is going down but Implied volatility is going up. This often happens before a reversal in the market and at least before choppiness in the market.

Implied volatility should rise as the market falls and vice versa. This indicator is much more sensitive than what you can visually see just by watching the volatility indice. When the two deviate it is a “caution” that markets could become choppy/reverse.

I watched the webinar this morning on the choppy market ind. I’ve got confusions on just getting them loaded. I’ve got IQ and the CBOT addon. I have the broad market index chart and I just followed the video to get that installed.

What I am after now is to get the choppy market warning ind. on the 4 US Indices. Where I’m confused is how to go about loading them into Ninja. Can you point out what part of video that will be in after you get it loaded into the forum?

#13

Add it like any other apex indicator

Just right click on your 10 minute chart - click indicator - choose apex diagnostic choppy market warning - update the symbol - there is a screenshot above showing this in this forum thread.

Here is the image again:

This video provides training on using the OPTIONAL choppy market warning indicator.

Reminder you must have the CBOE Indice data feed. We recommend obtaining this through Welcome Apex Investing Customer to DTN IQFeed! - Fast, Reliable, Affordable. Market Data and API’s.

Darrell this was perfect. Thanks. I wasn’t sure about a couple of them, but they seemed to take the symbol. I filled in the menus accordingly with the .XO. Here’s what I’ve got: YM=^VXD TF=^VXD ES=^VIX NQ=^VXN

#16

Looks good so long as it lines up did you have a question I can help with?

Except TF is RVX

SPX Either VIX? for SPX CBOE Volatility Index? S&P 500

ES VIN VIN.XO CBOE NEAR TERM S&P500 VOLATILITY INDEX CBOE INDEX CBOE

ummmm… ym and tf have the same cboe volatility index symbol there, pip.

#18

we need to add these volatility index symbols to the newly minted chart “Diagnostic Bar Size, Pattern Indicator, and Market Analyzer Settings”

#19

correct TF is RVX

#20

Yes you will have to manually add them once you have the data feed. As symbols are added to the database so you have to manually do it.

But once you add them my tip is save a 10 minute chart template ie with volume 8 ema volatile trend line and choppy market for every market you will use this on - so when you change markets you can just change the template (which will have the volatility symbol in the indicator that you put there when you saved the template)
