I have watched the video several times. Im not certain I understand all the mathematical machinations and why they are necessary. But overall it seems to me this all about great insight into price action etc and something an advanced trader would want. As a new trader, do I need this right now?

There is zero need to understand the mathmatical calculations behind the bar.
It is helping for a brand new or experienced trader as it cleans up the chart and simplifies and smooths out the indicators.
Not sure where your stuck just let us know. Focus on driving the car (the system) not how the car works (ie how transmissions works).
